Camshaft

Timing belt
The timing belt is a rubber belt that keeps the crankshaft and camshaft turning together, so the engine’s valves and pistons move in the correct sequence. Cambelt
Cambelt is simply another name for the timing belt, the two terms are used interchangeably. If you’ve been told your cambelt needs replacing, this is the same job as a timing belt replacement.
Timing chain
A timing chain does the same job as a timing belt, keeping the crankshaft and camshaft in sync, but it’s made of metal links and runs inside the engine, lubricated by engine oil. Timing chains are generally longer lasting than belts and were historically considered a lifetime component, though modern chains, particularly on smaller turbocharged engines, can stretch or wear and need replacing. Symptoms of a worn chain include a rattling noise on start-up and rough running.
Wet belt
A wet belt, sometimes called a belt in oil, is a timing belt that runs inside the engine submerged in oil, rather than outside the engine like a conventional dry belt. It’s found on certain modern Ford, Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall engines. Wet belts are more prone to premature wear because oil can degrade the rubber over time, and any fragments that break off can block the oil pump and cause serious engine damage. Replacement is a bigger job than a standard timing belt, since the engine has to be partially stripped down to access it.
Tensioners and guides
Tensioners and guides keep the timing belt or chain correctly aligned and under the right amount of tension as it runs. They wear over time even if the belt or chain itself still looks fine, and a failing tensioner is a common cause of the rattling or ticking noise people mistake for a belt problem. A proper timing belt or chain replacement always includes new tensioners and guides, not just the belt or chain on its own.
Water pump
The water pump circulates coolant around the engine to keep it running at the correct temperature. On many vehicles, the water pump is driven by the timing belt and sits in a position that’s only accessible once the belt has been removed. Because of this, it’s common practice to replace the water pump at the same time as the timing belt, since the labour to access it has already been done and it avoids a second strip down later.
Auxiliary belt
The auxiliary belt sits on the outside of the engine and drives things like the alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor. It’s a separate component from the timing belt or chain and doesn’t control engine timing, but a worn or snapped auxiliary belt can leave you without power steering or a charging battery, so it’s checked separately during a service.
Fanbelt
Fanbelt is an older name for the auxiliary belt. It comes from a time when this belt drove the engine’s cooling fan directly, and though most modern cars no longer use a mechanical fan, the name has stuck for the belt that drives the alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor.
